December, 2012

Notes From Bro. Doug:

We had such a full November with many great opportunities for fellowship and for service to our Lord. The youth did such an outstanding job on their musical called, "2 Extreme" and they are going to be starting another musical at the first of the year.

We had a very moving Veteran’s Day service on the morning of the 11th and we thank Frank Morgan from the Post 88 in Caruthersville for bringing all the flags. On the evening of the 11th we had our first annual Vision Night and many great ideas were presented and talked about for the continued direction of FBC.

Our 3rd annual Harvey Brown blood drive was a huge success. We had 47 come through with 27 units of blood taken. We want to thank Sheila Brown for setting the blood drive up and making sure all went well.

The Caruthersville Ministerial Alliance Thanksgiving service was a blessing. We met at the Jesus Name Tabernacle church and Bro. Anthony Stepp preached a wonderful sermon.

We had a record breaking 8 baptisms at one time on Sunday Nov. 18th. It was a joy to baptize that many during our morning worship service. God is moving in a big way and it is exciting to be a part of the movement of the Lord.

We had 48 Christmas boxes for the Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Ministry. We thank our Women on Mission for taking on this task. Our Women on Mission are hard at work trying to help us all meet the $10,000.00 goal we have set for the Lottie Moon Christmas offering. I really think we can reach that goal.

We had a missionary from Peru at our last Wednesday night service. Amy Fisher is a former member of the pastor’s in Kentucky and is home on leave. She gave us a clear picture of how the Lottie Moon offering and the Cooperative Program helps spread the gospel over all the world. Thanks Amy for taking time to be with us this last week.

Week of Prayer for International Mission kick-off is this Sunday night Dec. 2nd, at 5:00 pm. Everyone meet in

the sanctuary for a great time of information and prayer for our missionaries.

I hope you will make plans to be at two wonderful events in December. The Children’s musical on the 16th at 5:00 pm and the Christmas Eve service on Dec. 24th at 5:00 pm.

Thanks to everyone for a great year at FBC and I hope everyone has a Jesus Filled Christmas and New Year!

It’s Great to Be Your Pastor!

Bro. Doug

Women On Mission News:

The WOM are busy! First, we want to thank Bro. Doug and those who helped with the turkey sale. We are happy to report that we sold out and $801.00 was raised with a profit of $423.21 after expenses for our Lottie Moon Christmas offering! We are going at top speed to meet our goal so we can keep and send more missionaries to the field! We hope to send more from right here at FBC! Keep praying for Laura Boyd!

December 1st we will be having a "Merry Market" in the fellowship hall from 9:00 am to 2 pm. We’ll have Christmas decorations, Christian-themed items, homemade baked goods, peanut brittle, homemade jams, salsa and other miscellaneous things. We’ll also have hot chocolate and a baked goods table set up outside during the parade.

All proceeds go to our Lottie Moon Christmas offering as well. Beginning this Sunday, December 2, you will be able to purchase small red votive candles in a holder in memory of or in honor of a loved one for $25.00 with proceeds going to Lottie Moon. The candles will fill our sanctuary windows as they are purchased. This will be a beautiful sight, especially during our Christmas eve service and will shine with love and thoughtfulness of a loved one.

Our December meeting will be on Monday, Dec. 10th, at 6:30 pm at the home of Pam Peeler. Please join us for

the meeting along with the fun and fellowship and our work in missions.

The week of December 2 starts our week of prayer for the Lottie Moon offering. Our missionaries abroad depend on our offerings to keep them on the mission field doing God’s work. Please pray and generously give as we move into this special Christmas season. Our Lottie Moon offerings help bring hope to all nations. As we mentioned previously, our goal this year is $10,000.00. We are a mission minded church and we KNOW we’ll make it!

Youth Report:

The Youth Group has been busy throughout the month of November with several different projects. We started off the month having a "cotton trailer ride" on Saturday November 3rd. We had a good time and want to thank Mike & Brenda Sides (Sides Farms) for allowing us to use the farm truck and trailer full of cotton. We got some good pictures, the moon was full that night and it wasn’t too cold at that time. We also want to thank Casey’s General Store for donating the insulated cups for our hot chocolate.

From what I have been told many of us witnessed history at FBC on Nov. 18th, 2012 when Bro. Doug baptized 8 different youth in one day. I am so excited over the decision these youth have made in their lives. I know the water was dirty when it was over but they all came out clean. Praise the Lord! I am proud of the support from our congregation and the blessings given by the families who allowed us to baptize their children. There is no better gift that God can give us. The gift to know that we will spend our eternity with Him in Heaven and all we have to do is accept His Son, Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Who would not want to know that they are going to Heaven? And only a simple leap of faith makes sure you end up there.

The Youth Group received several request for yard work and other jobs from the congregation. This effort by the youth is to help the Women on Mission and our church meet the $10,000.00 Lottie Moon Missions goal. We have taken care of several requests and still have some we are getting to. If you have anything that needs to be done, just let us know.

Bro. Phil Barksdale and the Youth Choir really out did themselves with the play they presented. If you missed the presentation you missed a blessing from God. We are blessed with many talented people here at First Baptist and the great thing is many are using their talents to praise God. What better way to use your God-given talents?

We have plans to attend the Singing Christmas Tree in Memphis on the 9th after church, going bowling sometime over the Christmas break and having a Youth Christmas Party on the 23rd. We will also be decorating the youth room on the 2nd and having our monthly Birthday party at the same time.

We must thank God for the blessings He gives us on a daily basis. We can only try to repay God by praising Him and living each day for Him. By God allowing His Son to be crucified on the cross for us was the ultimate show of love. We need to get down on our knees and thank God so very much for His love and healing hands. I know we will one day meet again in heaven. I encourage each and every one of you, young and old that if you don’t know the Lord and have never accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior now is the time. Don’t wait, do it for you and your family. The peace of mind and joy you will feel in your heart knowing your name is down on the guest list is overwhelming and such a blessing.

Keep praying for our youth group and continue to pray for those who are lost. The most important thing this month is to remember why the word "Christ" is in Christmas! Remember! Merry Christmas and have a safe holiday season.

God Bless you all,

Chris & Kristy Riggs, Youth Pastor

We are recruiting additional members for the adult choir! If you are interested, please talk to me or Bro. Doug! As you have noticed, we have added some more guys to the group, but are definitely looking to add more! We are currently working on some great Christmas music under the direction of Bro. Doug, and would love for more of you to come and sing with us. We have had a great response from the congregation in regards to the choir being back in their robes on Sunday mornings. They look and sound better than ever! I can’t wait to see all that God has in store for our Adult Choir ministry!

Basic Apologetics

Every Sunday night at 6:00 pm in the Chapel

Our class on Basic Apologetics has begun, but it’s not too late for you to be a part of what God is doing in this group! Apologetics is the intellectual defense of the truthfulness of Christianity. Christianity has always been under attack, and God has always raised up apologists to challenge the unbelief that is always fashionable. Jude 3 tells us to "earnestly contend for the faith" and, in our group, we are learning to do just that! Apologetics is defense of our faith, not apologizing for it. In a world where the word "Christian" has seemed to become synonymous with the word "bigot", Christians seem to always be under attack by various causes and political jargon. Have you ever been singled out as a Christian to defend your beliefs? If so, this is the class you should be in. Together we search through scriptures and historical and scientific evidence to learn how to stand up for our faith in a way that is real and logical.

C.S. Lewis once said, "The truthfulness of what you’re defending doesn’t rest upon your arguments, but on the fact that the truth is true." we will be discussing such things as the authority of scripture, the trinity, the nature of God, creation versus evolution, defense against cults, and the second coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, along with many other topics. This course is only 10 weeks long, so don’t miss out on your chance to learn how to stand up for your faith to make you a bolder and more effective witness for our Lord.

Soli Deo Gloria,

FBC P.R.A.I.S.E. Report

Oh My! December 16 - the time for the Christmas musical "Company’s Coming!" - is getting closer and closer! The children have been practicing each week for this performance. I must admit that it is such a blessing to be able to help them rehearse their lines, watch them choreograph the songs, and listen to their excited voices as they sing. Vaughn and I have been working with them every Sunday from 4:00 - 6:00, and we will continue working at least two hours a week at church up to the time of performance. We are planning a dress rehearsal for the Friday or Saturday before the 16th, as well as a LAST rehearsal at 2:00 on that Sunday. Thank you parents and grandparents for bringing the snacks and drinks each week. We have had pizza, cookies, chips, dip, brownies , and more! Snack time is a very special time for the children to refuel and fellowship. Thank you everyone for all you do and have done to help out! Please pray for the children as they prepare for the

performance and as they pray for those they are inviting. We again ask that you pray fervently in advance for those who will attend the program (that God will prepare their hearts to receive the Word). We pray that God will continue to use us as His vessels to spread His Word to those who don’t know Him as their personal Savior.

Praising Him, Morgan
