Notes From Bro. Doug:

This Christmas season has been a wonderful time. The children did a great job on their musical, we had a big crowd on Christmas Sunday and a huge crowd for our Christmas Eve service. Thanks to all who came and participated. We want to thank the Women on Mission for a great year of missions and for leading our very successful fundraising for the Lottie Moon Christmas offering. We also want to thank everyone who decorated our church for the Christmas season. As we look back at 2012, we can truly see that God’s blessings were upon us. Although it was not all good news in 2012, because we did lose Bro. Gary Nolan as he resigned to be the music leader at another church, and we want to thank him for 11 ½ years of service, but God blessed us with another music leader, Phillip Barksdale, who was elected by the body with "0" NO votes. We also gave 100% vote to Pam Peeler as she is now our on staff Missions Coordinator. Pam is also the hospital and church visitation team leader. So God has blessed in those areas. He has blessed us with many baptisms this year, I’m not sure how many but we have more than doubled last year’s baptisms. He has also blessed us with many great givers in the church. Our budget and watchful spending is better than any year in recent memory and yet our usage and needs are greater than ever with our growing congregation, and yet we are meeting budget and meeting our spending needs. God has provided us with 4 new deacons and we had the privilege of ordaining 3 of them with one being ordained already. We started a new disciple class and the adult choir started back. The youth program is doing great, the children’s program is doing great, the mission groups are rebounding and doing great. We have so much to give thanks to the Lord for as a result of ministry, sacrifice and service at FBC in the year 2012. We give God all the Glory!!!!

Come join us as we start a new year in 2013. With your faithfulness and commitment we will have another blessed year.

I am so blessed to Be Your Pastor!

Bro. Doug

Women On Mission News:

It has truly been a blessed year for our Women on Mission. We’ve enjoyed a lot of great fellowship, praying and studying about missions, and doing local as well as international mission projects and fundraising. We’d like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and we look forward to our first meeting of 2013, which will be on a Monday, January 14 at 6:30 pm in the fellowship hall, it’s not too late to give to the Lottie Moon Christmas offering if you haven’t yet! Help us reach our goal and we are so thankful that we have a mission-minded, generous church!

With much love,

Christy, Pam & Peggy

Thank You:

I would like to say thank you to those who sent cards, brought food, and prayed for me after my recent knee surgery. I am so thankful to have such a loving wife and church family. Thank you for treating me like family.

Youth Report:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from First Baptist Youth Group.

The month of December has been very busy with all of the events that our youth have to participate in not only at church but in school as well. December is gone and now some can rest a little more before spring time gets here. We had our monthly Birthday party and Christmas decorating party in the youth room earlier in the month. We had about twenty youth and it was a good time for all. We had cake and snacks, took some pictures and decorated the youth room.

On the 9th we went to the Singing Christmas Tree at Bellvue Baptist in Memphis. WOW! It was great!! We ended up taking 26 people which took up the church van, my van, Pam Bullington and Amanda Maclin’s vehicles as well. The performance was outstanding and the blessing for all was great. If you have never seen this performance get with me next year and we might make a couple of trips. One for youth and one for the adults in the church who would like to go. We will make it happen!!

If you decide to go with us or on your own I suggest staying with me and not following Mrs. Kristy?? Why you ask? Lets just say the thunder, lightening and down pour from the thunderstorm and the fact the group got SOAKED going to where they THOUGHT the van was parked following Mrs. Kristy. WHEW..it was so funny and I had the keys to the van so I just kept walking. I was already soaked so a little more water did not make a big difference, however some were sure glad to see me get to the van. Funny memories and then Caroline almost put the McDonald’s in West Memphis out of business by herself. We had a great time and it was a very good message through song and performance.

We did some community projects to help with the Lottie Moon offering this month for Earl Bullington, Jim & Ewanda Young, JoAnn Morgan, Jon & Angie Constant, Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Dudley in the form of raking leaves and clean up. We had other projects however the weather and other events have kept us from getting to them. We still intend on getting those jobs done and will be in contact with the ones who put in a request.

We were proud to see the WOM group’s fundraiser on the day of the parade go well. It is so important for everyone to remember what being mission minded is all about. Our group who walked in the parade did a very good job and helped several that needed warm clothing.

We had our Christmas party on the 22nd, and had a blast. Good food and good Christian fellowship to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We called it celebrating Jesus’ Birthday party. We had a gift exchange and it was a fun time. Especially the green and red jingle bells shorts. Aint that right Adrian? (See fbcville.com) for pictures of recent events.

We are so blessed to have the youth we have in attendance. The Lord has blessed this church with so much talent and true Christian love. I cannot thank the parents and grandparents enough who bring their children to church.

We will continue to reach our children about God and the ways of the Bible. We are so grateful for the Grace & Mercy that has been shown to our family by the All Mighty God Himself. We are never alone and are loved by one who will never leave us or forsake us. This should be remembered by all and thought of as the best gift ever given to you. We ask that you continue to pray for our Youth Group & the daily struggles they go through.

We love you all,

Chris & Kristy Riggs, Youth Pastor

Common Ground

FBC’’s Praise and Worship Team

In March, the Pastor approached me about doing a praise and worship service in the chapel on Sunday mornings at 9:00 am, and in the Sanctuary the last Sunday of each month for the 10:30 am worship service, I, of course said that I would love to! On March 25th, I sat down at the piano in the chapel and opened with "I Will Enter His Gates with Thanksgiving in My Heart". A week later, I was joined by Bro. Gary Nolen, Amanda Maclin, Beth Prater, and my daughters, Connor and Erin Barksdale. A week after that, Dylan Treece joined the group. Today we are a few down, but have also added some more folks! Now Common Ground is Connor, Amanda, Beth, and sometimes Erin on vocals, Sara Riggs on Bass and Vocals, Chris Riggs on drums, Billy Brooks runs sound, and Erin runs powerpoints! We’ve had some high points such as the Worship Workshop, and playing at the Chili Cook-Off. We’ve had some low points, watching folks step down or move away, especially when Kevin went to be with the Lord back in August. However, through it all, I can still say without any doubt, that "I will rejoice, for He had made me glad!!" I am amazed everyday by the ways God shows His love to me, and at the fact that His mercies are truly, truly new every morning! Looking ahead, I am so excited at all the Lord will do through this ministry! Won’t you come and join us every Sunday morning in the chapel at 9:00 am, and let’s praise the name of the Lord together!! The Bible says that God "inhabits the praises of His people"! So come and let’s meet Him there together!

Soli Deo Gloria,

FBC Adult Choir

Wednesday Nights at 8pm

Last Sunday morning, the choir sang two songs, "Four Carols For Christmas," and "In the First Light". They did a wonderful job! Sis. Peggy directed the choir on the first song, pinch-hitting for Bro. Doug, and I directed them on the last song. It was such an honor for me to direct them, and I look forward to directing many more songs with them! Thanks to Sis. Peggy for stepping in on such short notice! The choir looks and sound better than ever! Get used to hearing and seeing them much more! If you are 16 and over and would like to be in the adult choir, please get with me, we have a place for you!

Basic Apologetics

Every Sunday night at 6:00 pm in the Chapel

Our class on Basic Apologetics has begun, but it’s not too late for you to be a part of what God is doing in this group! Apologetics is the intellectual defense of the truthfulness of Christianity. Christianity has always been under attack, and God has always raised up apologists to challenge the unbelief that is always fashionable. Jude 3 tells us to "earnestly contend for the faith" and, in our group, we are learning to do just that! Apologetics is defense of our faith, not apologizing for it. In a world where the word "Christian" has seemed to become synonymous with the word "bigot", Christians seem to always be under attack by various causes and political jargon. Have you ever been singled out as a Christian to defend your beliefs? If so, this is the class you should be in. Together we search through scriptures and historical and scientific evidence to learn how to stand up for our faith in a way that is real and logical.

C.S. Lewis once said, "The truthfulness of what you’re defending doesn’t rest upon your arguments, but on the fact that the truth is true." we will be discussing such things as the authority of scripture, the trinity, the nature of God, creation versus evolution, defense against cults, and the second coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, along with many other topics. This course is only 10 weeks long, so don’t miss out on your chance to learn how to stand up for your faith to make you a bolder and more effective witness for our Lord.

Soli Deo Gloria,

FBC P.R.A.I.S.E. Report

Once again, we close the 2012 year with bitter-sweet emotions. I was SO proud of the fifteen children on the FBC P.R.A.I.S.E. Team that so AWESOMELY performed the Christmas Story. The musical "Company’s Coming" on December 16, 2012, was not only about the birth of the Christ child, but also about the Christmas Spirit in general.

"It’s a time for joy, so put on a smile. The Hope of the world will be here in a while; God’s love come to earth in the form of a child, Rejoice! Company’s Coming!!"

We were reminded by the cute animal characters that we should try to get along with each other-no matter what our differences. Jesus came to all and for all. I must say I have never led such loving and caring children as those on the P.R.A.I.S.E. Team who show this "spirit" in their everyday lives. I don’t know if FBC realizes it or not, but we had only fifteen children to work with. We were not like the schools or other theaters in the community where there were tryouts and a multitude of "actors" to choose from. God sent us fifteen and we used those fifteen-and they are ALL so talented! I would say, "I am amazed," but with God doing the choosing, naturally, it was perfect!

I want to thank everyone that had a part in volunteering to help make this production possible. I know I will leave someone out. First of all, I thank the following kids for giving their time and working so hard: Kelsey Stevens, Laura Constant, James Prater, LeAnne Dudley, Alyssa Odell, Tatum Riggs, Samantha Barksdale, Kaley Grace, Will Treece, Jake Stevens, Hunter Maclin, Will Constant, Darnell Rodgers, Maria Nieves and Miranda Nieves.

This was the very FIRST production I have put on without Vaughn. However, he and Dylan came up beforehand and put the stage together and then went back afterwards and took it down. I could NOT do any of this without them. Dylan also ran the sound system for me, and I thank him for that as well.

I am very thankful for Chris Riggs and any other of the guys that took down the pulpit, as well as Phil Barksdale for helping get the microphones together. I am very thankful for Marilyn Strawn providing snacks and Pam Peeler for all the leg work she did. I especially thank all the parents and grandparents (and other family members) that made sure the kids were always there and provided snacks, help and support. I know that I have left someone out, please forgive me. I am so overwhelmed by the support I received from my neighbor and niece in supplying the hay (my neighbor saw I needed it and went to Dyersburg that day and brought it to me); from Cottonwood Baptist Church loaned us a manger as I frantically could not find one; and from everyone at FBC that helped in preparing and serving the finger foods afterwards. Many of you helped by all your encouraging words and prayers. I would NOT have made it without you! God is AWESOME, and I thank Him for allowing me to work with these children. These kids are certainly a huge blessing and the church is also a huge blessing to me. Please continue to pray as the Lord leads us in our next endeavor. Mery Christmas & Happy New Year!

Praising Him,

First Baptist Family,

I would like to thank everyone for all the cards and prayers for me while I have been recuperating from my surgery. I appreciate all your acts of kindness.

Betty Morgan

Thank you so much for packing shoe boxes this year. Many children will be blessed by your generosity, for every 1 shoe box 10 people hear the gospel. This would not be possible without God and you.
