First Baptist Beacon
Notes From Bro. Doug:
God is Good! All the time! And all the time God is Good! We had a wonderful summer around here at FBC. Youth camps. Children’s camp, VBS, swim party, potlucks, snack fellowships, concerts, youth trips, pizza parties, brotherhood breakfasts, guest speakers, movies, W.O.M., ice cream social, vacations, missions commissioning service, mission trip to India, kids back to school bash, baptisms, soup and chili fundraiser for missions, six flags trip...and much more. Again it has been a great summer. We have so much planned for the next few months. I hope, as a church member, you will see the responsibility given to you by God, to be present and accounted for in Sunday School, all worship services and all activities. If you are in a leadership position, keep leading by example, if you are in a service ministry, serve with the power of the Holy Spirit. If you are a pew sitter, get up and serve!!
I want to thank Bro. Ira Singleton for filling in for me while I was absent on August 19th. Peggy and I got some personal matters taken care of and a little break after her mission trip to India. We thank you for your support as Peggy went to see Laura and serve the Lord at the same time. Laura sends her thanks too, especially for the great items you sent. Make sure you come to a concert given by our Praise & Worship Team "Common Ground". They will be performing in our sanctuary on Sept. 8th at 6:00 pm.
I want to invite all members of FBC to come to the monthly potluck dinners in the fellowship hall. They are on the same nights as business meeting.
Calling all Senior Adults!!! we are hosting the Associational Senior Adult fellowship at FBC on Sept. 20th at 11:00 am. There will be a program and meal provided.
DEACON NOMINATIONS...I hope you are praying about the 4 men you will be nominating for the deacon ministry this year. Please choose men that are faithful in attendance, in service and in caring for others.
Let’s have a HUGE crowd on COME BACK TO CHURCH DAY!! The date is set for Sunday, Sept. 16th.
We are shooting for 125 in Sunday School and 175 in worship. Then that evening we will be having our annual church picnic at the England Park in the pavilion. Everyone is welcome to bring the whole family and bring potluck items and drinks and lawn chairs. We will be having a baptism service again on Sunday Sept. 16th during the morning service..
It’s Great to Be Your Pastor!
If you have any announcements to be on the Sunday morning power point, please have your information turned in by Thursday noon. Thanks!
Please contact us: If your children or grandchildren have received any honors in school, let us know so we can announce it in the newsletter.
Women On Mission:
Summer is winding down and fall is in the air! Women on Mission will continue to plan all types of fun mission projects as we look toward the remaining months of 2012! We are excited to report that we raised a grand total of $587.00 at our soup and salad lunch, with all proceeds going to the Lottie Moon Christmas offering! THANK YOU to all the ladies who shared in making the luncheon such a huge success, and of course, to those who made the delicious soups and desserts!
I’d like to remind the ladies (and any others who would like) to bring your cookies for our next meeting night for our police, fire and first responders. Our meeting will be Monday, September 10, at 6:00 pm in the fellowship hall. We will package all the goodies together and deliver them to the police and fire station on Tuesday, September 11. This is a small way to show our gratitude for those who put themselves in harms way to keep us safe. If you can’t be at the September 10 meeting, feel free to bring the cookies on Sunday and leave them in the fellowship hall. The September Mission Mosaic magazines are on the table in the fellowship hall, so feel free to pick one up. Our September meeting will be extra-special with Peggy sharing some of her India experiences with us! Please come and see how the blessings flow as Peggy shares her memories.
I am enjoying so much working with the incredible ladies in our women’s group and look forward to the next few months with great excitement as we continue planning and implementing mission projects to spread the gospel far and wide.
Our meetings are open to all, so please come join the fun on September 10!
Love in Christ,
It seems like just yesterday that I was typing out July’s report and here it is time for August news already. Whew...time is flying by. As usual I want to start by thanking our First Baptist Family for supporting the youth at our church like you do. We had a busy month and had some fun as well.
We finally made it to Six Flags in St. Louis. It was a very long day starting at about 5:00 am and when I looked at my clock after finally getting home that next morning it was 3:04 am. WHEW!! But well worth the time and effort. We took 28 total, 22 kids and 6 adults. We started out with a good breakfast, bacon, ham, biscuits and gravy and then we were on our way. The trip up in the van was a "trip" itself and the kids had a great time from start to finish. The weather was beautiful. The rides were amazing and to top it all off we got to see Third Day in concert WOW it was great. Thousands of Christians all together in one place worshiping God together. It don’t get much better than this. We took several pictures of our trip and they are posted on the church we site at We also put 30 hour famine pics, Jonathan Creek Church camp pics, and Winter Jam.
Congratulations go out to Sara Riggs and Beth Prater! Both young ladies are the Drum Majors for Cooter and Caruthersville High. You can see Beth strutting her stuff on Friday nights at the Caruthersville Tiger football game’s half time show and in the stands. We will then get to see Sara and Beth leading the way with the not so far off Christmas parades, maybe Homecoming and Halloween parades as well. GOOD JOB LADIES! We are proud of you. Good luck!
We are starting a new fundraiser to try and get a jump start on funds needed for next year’s camp and other activities for the youth. PIZZA is the plan this time. We will be selling homemade pizzas. We will make the pizzas here at the church and then you can pick them up or we can deliver them to you. These pizzas will not be cooked but made to order. These pizzas you will put in your freezer and cook when you want one. We will have several to choose from and we all hope this fundraiser is a great success. Please buy from the youth when you are asked. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed with the product you receive. $10.00 for single toppings and $12.00 for all meat. We are trying to keep it simple so no supreme or vegetable pizzas this time. YUMMM! Remember all donations or purchases from the youth are tax deductible
2012 Winter Jam is not far off and we are looking at which location we are going to this year. Toby Mac is the featured artist this year an it’s building up to be a very jam packed praise God night no matter where we end up. An end of summer Youth Group pool party bash will be happening in the next couple of weeks at the Prater’s house. We have not set the date yet but we will be taking the Prater’s up on their offer. Thanks again, Ronnie & Susan!!! Don’t put your floaties and goggles up just yet!! We will have good food there as well.
On August 5th we held our monthly Birthday party for the ones in Youth that had a birthday in the month of July. We had several who had a birthday in July and had hotdogs, cake and punch for refreshments. Another great night of fun and fellowship.
On August 19th, Sunday night service we were treated to a post trip overview by Peggy Boyd of her trip to India. The presentation was very informative and interesting to hear from Mrs. Peggy and her first-hand accounts of what is happening in that country. It was also a blessing to all to see the changes and the help being given to those underprivileged children and people. We are truly blessed to have what we do and I think the youth have a good understanding of how lucky they are to live in a country like the good ole USA. The best part of the presentation was knowing that our missionaries are spreading the Word of God, telling stories about Jesus and helping to bring those lost souls to salvation. Please continue to pray for our Youth and our continual spiritual growth. God Bless everyone! HAVE A BLESSED DAY!
Chris & Kristy Riggs,

With God’s Love,
Chris & Kristy Riggs

The week of July 23rd - 27th, I along with 15 kids and 2 other caregivers went to children’s camp at Van Buren. Bro. Todd Higgs of living Stone Baptist Church was the camp director. Our theme this year was based on FirstTimothy 4:15. A big "Thank You" to those who gave to the scholarship fund, provided snacks and paid for their lunch at McDonald’s going up.
I pray they all received a blessing from the camp and brought home to share with others what we learned through the songs, Bible study and devotions. We have a great group of kids and youth here. Please lift them all up in your prayers. They face so many problems in life now; things you and I never had to deal with. We know "All things are possible through Jesus Christ" (Romans 8:28) and if we ask in His name He will do it (John 1:13 & 14). Remember, we are never too young or too old to tell others what He has done for us and to pray for one another. Love in Christ,
