February, 2013

Notes From Bro. Doug: Things are going so wonderfully at FBC. We give all the glory and praise to the Lord! He is blessing with "showers of blessings". I am so proud of this congregation and their faithfulness. Let’s made 2013 the best year ever at First Baptist Church. I hope and pray you join in the many ministries we have going at First Baptist. We can truly say we have something for everyone, from kids to senior adults. So many of you are making great sacrifices to help build the Kingdom of God and God will bless you for it.

2012 was a good year. You met budget, you brought many to the Lord, you were faithful in attendance, you gave much to missions, in so many ways you sang praises to the Lord and glorified the Lord in your witness and your service. Thank God today for this church and for this family!

It’s Great to Be Your Pastor!

Bro. Doug

Youth Report:

Well here we go with a brand new year and all of those New Year’s Resolutions that will be kept by everyone who made one. HAHA..The youth group has been busy and we are getting bigger and bigger. We are averaging around 18 on Sunday mornings and 23 or more on Sunday and Wednesday nights. As most of you know we are selling pizzas for a fund raiser and they will made and available for pick up on February 2nd, around noon. Each youth member was asked to sell at least 15 pizzas. The last day to order is Sunday, January 27th, so we can place our supply order. The youth are required to be at the church to help make the pizzas at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday Feb. 2nd. We are getting ready for a couple of upcoming concerts. On Wednesday February 27, we will leave the church around 5:30 pm for a concert at the Agape Worship Center’s IMPACT Center featuring "The Museum". This is a good band you can hear on K-LOVE all of the time. The next concert wis in March in Memphis and is Winter Jam 2013 featuring several bands but headlining Toby Mac. Ticket money and registration has to be paid by February 15th. We are paying for half of the youth members tickets which is $15.00 and non-members must first qualify to go and then they have to pay the full $30.00 to attend. Parents, please remember to send spending money and food money with your youth. I will try to have us home earlier than 3:13 a.m. LOL!!!

We are gearing up for the Cross in your yard fund raiser for Easter. We have several asking already and we will be having a meeting to get the forms out and see how many more we need to make. If you would like a cross please let us know. Easter will be here before we know it. We are pretty sure the cost will stay $10.00 per cross and you can order as many for your yard as you want. The youth will put them out, unless you request otherwise. We will be having a youth committee meeting soon to finalize some upcoming events. Kevin and Ashlea Riggs will be heading up this Cross fund raiser as they did last year. We really appreciate their efforts, it was a big success and will be even bigger this year. Don’t miss out!

The youth group, with the help of Bro. Doug will be sponsoring a dinner on February 12th, 2013 at 6:00 pm in our church fellowship hall. This is to honor all senior adults. It will be a good meal and dessert and you will have live entertainment from a group featuring Caruthersville’s own Lee Wigginton, the group is called "Christian Love". I hear they are great and it will be a blessing to have them at our church. Please make arrangements and plan to attend this dinner. You must sign up by Feb. 10th. Let the youth sow their respect and honor to you through this dinner and fellowship time.

God is strong at First Baptist and I can see Him working in a mighty way with the youth group. We are growing & that is a good thing. We have great support from the Pastor, deacons & the entire congregation & we love each of you for the support you show us on a regular basis. We will continue to do the Lord’s work in leading your children down the right path that ends them up at Heaven. Building a strong foundation for God in the lives of our young people will stay with them throughout their lives & hopefully lead them back to FBC with their families in the future. Our youth are the FUTURE of this church and at this point and time I would say out future looks bright. Please continue to pray for the youth & the daily struggles they go through in this mean old world, especially as teenagers in today’s society. We are committee to fighting the evil in this world & to give your children the chance they deserve to know Jesus Christ.

With Love,

Chris & Kristy Riggs,

Youth Pastor

Youth Choir

Every other Sunday @ 5pm in the choir room!

Common Ground

FBC’’s Praise and Worship Team

Well, I have some big news for CG! Beginning March 10th, we will no longer have rehearsals every other Sunday at 3:00 pm. After that, we will have rehearsals the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Sundays at 4:00 pm. This will give you a week off, except for 5th Sunday months - then you’ll have 2 Sundays off. This was one of the many things that came to pass after our Music department meeting of January 20th. Also, as we discussed at our last practice, we will no longer be doing the worship for the 10:30 am service on the final Sunday of the month. From now on, we will do worship on the 5th Sundays of those months that have a fifth Sunday. Let me elaborate for Erin...not all months have 5 Sundays..most have 4! This will give us some more time to put together that service, less moving equipment around, and will play as an introduction to the special events that happen on 5th Sunday nights! The 9:00 am praise and worship service will continue and will not be affected at all.

I am also glad to welcome Dylan Treece back into the group along with Kelsey Vandergriff, who will both be playing guitar, also Bro. Doug will be joining the group! We have a lot of work to do preparing for special events this spring, especially the Easter Sunday presentation of "The Thorn". There will be more about all this in our next practice, which will be on Feb. 3rd at 3:00 pm.

On a sadder note, Amanda Maclin has decided to step down from CG for now, due to her new extra responsibilities! While we rejoice with her over her beautiful additions to the Maclin family, we will still miss singing with you! I pray that you will still be able to use your talents for God’s glory as much as you possibly can! That’s all for now! I’ll see you all Sunday morning at 9:00 am for Praise and Worship in the Memorial Chapel!

Soli Deo Gloria,

Phil

Special Music

If you would like to be put on the calendar to sing a special in our morning service, please get with me, so I can put you in the rotation. We have a lot of talent in our church and I hope you will share it with us!

FBC Adult Choir

Wednesday Nights at 8pm

The adult choir is hopping! We will be singing special music on January 27th. It is a beautiful arrangement of the Twila Paris song, "How Beautiful". We are also working on a Cantata for Easter called "Majesty". It is a wonderful score, and story which looks back over the week of the Passion through the eyes of the Apostle John and Mary Madalene. We will present this musical on Palm Sunday night at 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary. The adult choir will also be doing selections during our special Easter service, "The Thorn". It’s not too late to be a part of what God is doing in this amazing group of people! If you would like to be a part of the Choir, get with Bro. Doug or me...we will definitely be able to use you!

Basic Apologetics

Every Sunday night at 6:00 pm in the Chapel

Our class on Basic Apologetics has begun, but it’s not too late for you to be a part of what God is doing in this group! Apologetics is the intellectual defense of the truthfulness of Christianity. Christianity has always been under attack, and God has always raised up apologists to challenge the unbelief that is always fashionable. Jude 3 tells us to "earnestly contend for the faith" and, in our group, we are learning to do just that! Apologetics is defense of our faith, not apologizing for it. In a world where the word "Christian" has seemed to become synonymous with the word "bigot", Christians seem to always be under attack by various causes and political jargon. Have you ever been singled out as a Christian to defend your beliefs? If so, this is the class you should be in. Together we search through scriptures and historical and scientific evidence to learn how to stand up for our faith in a way that is real and logical.

C.S. Lewis once said, "The truthfulness of what you’re defending doesn’t rest upon your arguments, but on the fact that the truth is true." we will be discussing such things as the authority of scripture, the trinity, the nature of God, creation versus evolution, defense against cults, and the second coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, along with many other topics. This course is only 10 weeks long, so don’t miss out on your chance to learn how to stand up for your faith to make you a bolder and more effective witness for our Lord.

Soli Deo Gloria,

Phil

2 Extreme

FBC Youth Choir

2 Extreme will begin meeting again on February 10th in the choir room downstairs..until it warms up a little, then we will move back to the 2 Extreme Ward on the third floor. Trust me, it’s cold up there!!! choir practice will now be every Sunday at 4:00 pm, until we spring forward on March 10th. After that, we will meet every Sunday at 5:00 pm. I am currently planning our tour of "2 Extreme: The Musical" which will take place between the middle of March through the middle of April. This doesn’t mean, we will be somewhere every week doing this musical. It just means the tour will begin in the middle of March and after the middle of May, we will no longer be doing that musical. We are also going to begin working on a new musical. We are doing a retro-style theme for this one. It is called "friends Forever". FBC youth group did this back in the late 80's. We will try to recreate their look, costumes, set, vocabulary, and ever their dance moves. I hope our congregation will feel like they just stepped into a time machine when they show up to see this one. We will also be working on some extra stuff. We have a few human videos that I would like to see us do, and some newer selections for special occasions, so your brain doesn’t melt from all the retro we’re doing! You will also be playing a big part in our special Easter Sunday presentation of "The Thorn". More on that at our first rehearsal! If you are not yet a part of 2 Extreme, and would like to be, just be in the choir room at 4:00 pm on February 10th. You must be in 7th grade through college, and be willing to make a joyful noise! I can’t wait to get started this year!

The Thorn

Easter - it’s the greatest story ever told, and on March 31st it will come to life with The Thorn Easter Experience! Through realistic videos of the Easter story, live dramas, and beautiful music featuring our worship team, Common Ground, the Adult Choir, and P.R.A.I.S.E., you will experience the power and compassion of Jesus’ life, the pain of his crucifixion and the triumph of his resurrection.

The Thorn is a spectacular, live presentation of the story of the cross. With its combination of music, acting, dance, martial arts, and pyrotechnics, The Thorn has become the largest volunteer-based Easter production in the United States. Nearly one million people have witnessed this dramatic live event, and now exclusive videos, music and dramatic monologues from The Thorn are available to us for our Easter service. You won’t want to miss this!!

Easter is a perfect opportunity to invite friends, neighbors and co-workers to join us at FBC, so begin praying for the people you will invite! The Thorn Easter Experience is a unique and beautiful service that will inspire your guests and encourage them to respond to the saving grace of the gospel message.

FBC P.R.A.I.S.E. Report

The Easter musical "The Easter Pageant That Almost Wasn’t" - is in the works! We have 24 children on board for this new production! I am now in the process of rewriting some of the script to include more children! The FBC P.R.A.I.S.E. Team is scheduled to perform the new EASTER MUSICAL on Sunday, March 17th , 2013 at 6:00 p.m. the music is SO energetic, we may have to buy duct tape to keep everyone (adults included) in their seats. The music will include Hip Hop, Rap, Choral, Reggae, and more!!!! It is going to be "ELECTRIFYING!" On Sunday, Feb. 10th, we will have our Valentine’s Party "Praise the Lord and Pass the Chocolate!" Everyone bring your favorite chocolate dessert or snack. We will have a cake walk, games, snacks, and more fun! The exact time of the party has not yet been determined.
We are having a great time upstairs. If you hear a little noise, remember..there are a LOT of little feet up there! If you have a child that would like to join us, NOW is the time.
Please pray for the children as they prepare for the performance and as they pray for those they are inviting. We pray that God will continue to use us as His vessels to spread His Word to those who don’t know Him as their personal Savior.

Praising Him,
Morgan & Vaughn
